Cleaning baseboards is one of those household chores that most people put off as long as possible. - Wear comfortable clothing for bending and possibly crawling. Using a mat to kneel on makes for happier knees.
- Have all your intended cleaning supplies handy, so you don’t have to keep getting up and down, especially if you are on the floor.
- Make sure you know what materials compose your baseboards and use cleaning products that will clean but not damage your baseboards.
- Some of the supplies often used for cleaning baseboards are clean rags, a bucket of warm, soapy water, a sponge, and magic erasers (for stubborn stains).
- If you are doing a spring house cleaning which includes walls, be sure to wash the wall first so any dirt and dust will fall before you clean the baseboards. You don’t want to have to clean the baseboards twice.
- Sweep or vacuum the baseboards and the floor around them.
- Use a damp rag with warm water, soap, or detergent to wipe the baseboards, tops, and bottoms, as well as the front surface.
- Most baseboards have a “lip,” so be sure to give this area an extra clean. You can use an old toothbrush to loosen dirt that sometimes gathers there. Then wipe the dirt away.
- Let the baseboards air dry for at least an hour before putting back furniture or items you might have moved to better access your baseboards.
- Allow plenty of time (depending on how many baseboards need cleaning) to do the job properly.
- Play your favorite music to help make the job more pleasant.
- After returning the cleaning supplies to their designated storage area, treat yourself to a favorite snack and beverage.
