Bedrooms are so often the place where we just stop and drop. As guests usually don’t see in our bedrooms, we aren’t as careful about how neat and clean we keep them. It is so nice not to have everything just so all the time, and a bedroom is the best place for this to happen. Even in homes where the bed is made every day and clothes hung up or put in a clothes hamper, a bedroom may still be the “relaxing” room.
Cleaning a bedroom can also be done a little less frequently and not quite as thoroughly as other rooms. Sometimes this fact is presented because people don’t spend a lot of awake time in their bedroom and, again, because outsiders aren’t usually looking in bedrooms. And, while the above is true, it is still necessary to thoroughly clean a bedroom at least every few months.
A weekly dusting of surfaces and vacuuming the floor (including under the bed) can suffice for several weeks. However, there will come a time when a thorough cleaning of your bedroom is a good idea. Here are some tips to help get the job done efficiently:
- Plan to do a thorough cleaning when you have some extra time to spend. Depending on the size of your bedroom and how much furniture you have there will determine time spent cleaning.
- Make a plan as to how you will clean.
- Cleaning the walls and doors is a good place to start. Wipe down with a damp cloth. You can use a magic eraser for tough spots on places like light switches and around door handles.
- Next, clean the large pieces of furniture. Wipe all surfaces with a damp cloth or, if wood, a cloth with appropriate cleaner for wood. Be especially careful to wipe bedposts and chair rungs.
- Make sure all surfaces such as bureau and dresser tops are wiped clean. You may need to clear these surfaces of clutter before cleaning.
- When cleaning your bed, be sure to not only dust under the bed but mop with a damp mop with the appropriate cleaner. And, if possible, turn your mattress, vacuuming both sides to get rid of skin particles and mites.
- After all the items in your bedroom are cleaned and sanitized, it is time to do the floor. Again, depending on your floor covering will determine how best to thoroughly clean the bedroom floor. Carpets would be vacuumed and at least spot cleaned. Wood floors would be washed as directed to type. Tile floors would be swept and damp mopped. Any throw or scatter rugs would be washed or at least taken outside and given a good shake.
- When all is done, spray a pleasant-smelling disinfectant in the room.
